Hamish Carr has now been promoted to Professor of Computer Science, effective August 1, 2020. This involved a formal application to the University, and being lightly grilled by a Promotions Panel in late October. But of all the questions asked, the hardest to answer was after the formal decision, when he was asked “What do you want to be a Professor of?” It took a couple of days to think that one through. Should it be “Computational Topology”? “Exascale Visualisation”? “Visualisation and Computer Graphics”? “High Performance Graphics”? And who pays attention to a detail like that anyway? So in the end, “Computer Science” seemed the best idea.
